The Bewitching is the first book I’ve read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I enjoyed it enough that I have added Mexican Gothic to my TBR list too.

This book runs across three timelines which can be confusing but this is done so well and I never forgot which era I was in. I also often find with split timelines, I get invested in one and the other(s) just bug me, but I found myself invested in all three with this book, although I think Alba’s was my favourite by just a little bit. Each timeline is encased in it’s own mysteries that kind of mirror each other to some extent. The book is beautifully written and although there is the odd slow spot, it pulled me right in and made me want to keep reading.
The witchcraft element of the book is heavily hinted at in all three of the timelines, particularly Alba’s and Ginny’s, but it’s quite late in the book before any real evidence of it comes into play. I would have liked to have seen some stuff earlier, but that’s really a minor complaint because the book did work well the way it was. Also, if I am being critical, I did find the ending a bit of let down. Don’t get me wrong, it tied the story up well, but I felt like it was a little bit under whelming.
Overall, I would give this book a solid 4.5/5
